Lawrence Timmons injury: Steelers linebacker suffers back injury, is expected to return

The Steelers linebacker suffered a fluke injury, but is expected to return in the third quarter.

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

The Steelers lost their second defensive starter of the half when linebacker Lawrence Timmons went down with what looked like a neck or shoulder injury in the third quarter.

Free safety Mike Mitchell delivered a big hit on Browns tight end Jordan Cameron on a deep third down pass. It appeared to catch Timmons as well, and his head bent backward at an awkward angle.

Timmons was down for a bit and took his helmet off but eventually was able to jog off the field under his own power. Later reports suggested it was a back injury but he's expected to return.

The Steelers lost Steve McLendon earlier in the quarter, and the pair joins the trio of Ike Taylor (arm), Ryan Shazier (knee) and Jarvis Jones (wrist) as Steelers Week 1 defensive starters who have left with injuries.

If Timmons is to miss time, Vince Williams would likely replace him in the team's base defense. Terence Garvin may see some time as well.
