Former Steelers first round pick Cameron Heyward is showing life with new defensive responsibilities.

Pro Football Focus, an evaluation web site, gave Steelers defensive end Cameron Heyward a 3.3 grade - the highest among Steelers defensive players - for his performance in Saturday's loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Heyward was given credit for a sack, two pressures and four hurries. It is the highest grade the site has ever given Heyward.

Heading into the 2013 season, Heyward is one of the biggest question marks on the team. A first round draft pick in 2011, he hasn't managed to get on the field often so far in his career. However, with a more upfield-aggressive style the Steelers plan to implement in the 2013 regular season, Heyward's explosiveness may be better utilized than the two-gap technique the Steelers' defensive ends have employed for the last several years.

Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was given the highest overall grade for the team at 4.1.

Offensively, the Steelers had four players with negative grades - tight end David Paulson (-1.1), right guard David DeCastro (-1.2), left tackle Mike Adams (-1.4) and running back Jonathan Dwyer (-1.5).

Defensively, linebacker Larry Foote earned a 2.0, the third-highest grade for the team in the game. Much-maligned cornerback Josh Victorian had a -0.7.

Their career as a member of the Steelers is about to come to an end for 15 players on Tuesday. Here's a look at the men who could make it all the way to the regular season.

If the third week of preseason action is a glimpse into how team's intend to use their personnel in the regular season, the Pittsburgh Steelers gave us a glance on how they may setup their final 53-man roster.

This is far from a prediction as the Steelers still have one more preseason game to play. While the fourth week is usually played by players about to be unemployed, a few positions have yet to be settled.

Running Back

Felix Jones played as well as one can for being with his team for less than 24 hours before his first game. Depending on the health of injured backs Le'Veon Bell, Isaac Redman and LaRod Stephens-Howling will dictate whether Jones can survive final cuts, despite contributing to the offense and special teams. Redman has the most reason for concern after missing two straight weeks after suffering a shoulder stinger in practice after the New York Giants game. Baron Batch is out of time. Alvester Alexander and Jeremy Wright will compete in Week 4 for a practice squad spot, if there are any to be had for running backs this season.

Wide Receiver

Antonio Brown and Emmanuel Sanders are locked into the final roster. Markus Wheaton is a shoe-in to make the team, although whether he will be the third or fourth has yet to be determined. Beyond them, it's anyone's guess. Jerricho Cotchery looks to be the fourth, although with the performance of Derek Moye against the Chiefs and Justin Brown in the first two games and training camp, Cotchery's name can be added to the speculation of Jonathan Dwyer or Isaac Redman being cut by season's start to clear cap space to offer someone an extension, like Sanders. Justin Brown had zero catches against the Chiefs and may have been passed by the bigger Moye. Reggie Dunn continues to do everything asked of him well, and is every bit as deserving of a returner's spot as Chris Rainey was in 2012, even if he doesn't take the field with the offense as a receiver. J.D. Woods and J. Brown look like prime practice squad candidates.

Tight End

Kelvin Beachum's participation at TE against the Chiefs further fuels conjecture toward Heath Miller beginning the season on the roster and not the PUP list. David Paulson and David Johnson will most likely hold the other two spots, with Matt Spaeth taking Johnson's spot when he returns mid-season after being designated for return from IR. Jamie McCoy is probably the Steelers' scout team TE. Michael Palmer will have one more week to seize Johnson's spot. Nathan Overbay and Peter Tuitupou are likely cuts on Tuesday.

Offensive Line

The Steelers have seven productive linemen, but they will probably carry eight on the roster. Joe Long has been finding snaps with the second string, but has not been impressive enough to warrant a gameday spot. Guy Whimper should be one of Tuesday's cuts, along with Mike Farrell. Joe Madsen may stick to play center in the fourth game before being released. If the team keeps eight men, the final spot may go to D'Anthony Batiste, who could hang on. Not that he's been overly impressive, but he has remained invisible, which at this point is a good thing. He will most likely be an inactive gameday member unless someone else gets hurt.

Defensive Line

Alameda Ta'amu couldn't get on the field against the Chiefs; Hebron Fangupo did. It's beginning to look like the team could carry six DL on their roster, with Fangupo inactive because of Al Woods involvement at nose tackle in addition to his end responsibilities. Ta'amu may still make the scout team, but ends Nicholas Williams and Brian Arnfelt seem to be leading the race, and the team is not likely to carry three DL on the practice squad.

Linebackers

Behind the starters and first-round draft pick Jarvis Jones, this depth chart is wide open. Alan Baxter has been convincing enough for the team to ship Adrian Robinson to the Philadelphia Eagles. Chris Carter has been convincing enough to believe he won't make the team, although he remains higher on the depth chart than Baxter for now; but Baxter keeps putting his motor on film, and may not survive a cut to get him on the practice squad. If the team wants to keep him around, they may need to make him the fourth OLB, even if he's inactive on gamedays due to his lack of experience. Brian Rolle was impressive inside in the first two games, but was invisible against the Chiefs. Sylvester did not play, but may carry the same benefit of doubt as running back Redman with veteran experience and his ability to play inside and outside positions. Kion Wilson is still trying to supplant someone above him.

Defensive Backs

We could see a battle between safety Da'Mon Cromartie-Smith and cornerback Josh Victorian for one of the last roster spots. Victorian has been hot and cold this preseason, but a missed tackle which allowed a special team's TD and a penalty which negated a Jarvis Jones interception may undo him like David Gilreath's muffed punt undid him. Isaiah Green did not dress against the Chiefs despite having a good camp. He may also be fighting with Victorian, only for a scout team seat instead. Considering the deeper members of the secondary need to play special teams, Victorian's failed tackle will not help his case.

Punter

Brian Moorman was brought in because Drew Butler was inconsistent last year. Shanking a punt which resulted in points for the Chiefs makes Butler more attractive due to his age.

Gameday Inactives (7)

QB Landry Jones, WR Derek Moye, OT D'Anthony Batiste, NT Hebron Fangupo, LB Alan Baxter, LB Vince Williams, DB Da'Mon Cromartie Smith (Moye would be the prime candidate to swap places with Heath Miller until he is ready to return.)

Practice Squad (8)

TE Jamie McCoy, OT Joe Long, OG Justin Cheadle, WR Justin Brown, WR J.D. Woods, DE Brian Arnfelt, DE Nicholas Williams, DB Josh Victorian (If Cheadle's injury still requires significant time, his seat could go to Chris Hubbard. Mike Golic Jr. has only seen the field on special teams, but could be considered for this spot as well.)

The Steelers saw another woeful special teams performance as well as far too many penalties, but the re-emergence of Cortez Allen and the battle for the Steelers' 5WR spot brings some optimism.

1. Penalties hurt

It doesn't require much explanation, and even Steelers coach Mike Tomlin seemed miffed as to what needs to be done to fix it. The Steelers have 243 yards of penalties in three games. As Tomlin said, though, they're running out of time before the pain really starts.

2. Special teams

The offense took a good step forward in this game (minus the penalties, of course) after a poor showing against Washington in their second game. The special teams has now become the anchor of the team. Plain and simple, allowing the block of even a 52-yard field goal drags down a team's production. Whether that was Suisham hitting it too high in an effort to muscle up or blockers simply not executing, it's another instance in which the special teams failed. No worries, though, they only allowed 109-yard kickoff return for a touchdown too.

3. Jarvis Jones

Jarvis Jones test results are negative

No longer "inconclusive" and now a definitive "negative."

On the play that resulted in his injury, Jones dropped back into coverage, showing the confidence the Steelers have in using him as more than just an edge rusher. He has a good awareness of his zone, and glides over to where the ball was thrown. It was an aggressive mistake, if a mistake at all, by Steelers cornerback Josh Victorian, but Jones saw the play happening, and benefited from a tipped pass right to him.

His injury looked plenty painful, but not as bad as the pain the team will feel if he is, indeed, out for an extended period of time. It appeared as if he was tackled onto the ball. Taking no chances, the Steelers took him to the hospital Saturday night after the game.

4. Derek Moye and Reggie Dunn making strong arguments

If the Steelers don't have any depth after Markus Wheaton and Jerricho Cotchery, no one told Moye that. A tough and rugged performance Saturday has to give him the inside track on the Steelers' 5th WR position, and that's despite another patient-and-explosive return performance from Reggie Dunn.

Dunn has only had a handful of opportunities to make returns, but hasn't forced the issue, either. He's caught everything he's had a chance to catch, and he made another solid return Saturday. His biggest issue is the possibility of Felix Jones showing some life as a kick returner, putting another veteran returner in the fold. It may be too much for him to overcome, but it wouldn't be a surprise, if the Steelers do cut him, if he gets picked up somewhere else.

5. Cortez Allen roars back

Depth in the Steelers' secondary was a valid question entering the preseason, but even with the extended time missed by Allen, he showed he's on the brink of having a big year in Pittsburgh. While he did miss a tackle early in the game, he played with little rust and showed he hasn't lost any ground.

He racked up six tackles, and looked more like a safety in run support than a cornerback. It won't be easy for teams to throw against the Steelers, and with the rash of takeaways the defense has been forcing, Allen may become a household name sooner rather than later.

The Steelers used utility OL Kelvin Beachum as the second tight end in 2-TE sets in Saturday's preseason loss to the Chiefs. It's not common, but the question is how frequent will it be used in the future.

If the Steelers were looking to get creative in their preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs, they managed to accomplish that goal.

How much it helped still remains to be seen.

It appeared as if playing utility offensive lineman Kelvin Beachum as the team's second tight end was more of a game-planning decision rather than a move indicating a direction of the roster. It makes a lot of sense, though. Beachum, known for his intelligence, now has gotten looks either in games or practices at all six offensive line positions. While it's likely indicative of a power run formation than any kind of sneaky short passing play, one can't rule that out, either.

Beachum's results varied in terms of protection - it was another game with a bit too much pressure on quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and not clear enough lanes for the running backs - but the concept itself is intriguing.

The Steelers have used reserve offensive linemen in 3-TE sets, on the goal line in particular, but using one in a 2-TE set isn't usual. Considering the speed and power of outside linebackers Tamba Hali and Justin Houston, the move makes sense.

The question now is whether it's something they'll use come Week 1 against the Tennessee Titans.

Offensive coordinator Todd Haley showed in the Steelers' 26-20 (OT) loss to Kansas City passes can come from any range to any receiver on the field at any time.

The game plan appeared to center around the idea of balance in the Steelers' third preseason game - a 26-20 (OT) loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

It just ended without that sense of balance for the first teamers.

The Steelers got the ball after forcing a Chiefs punt on the first possession. After running back Jonathan Dwyer went nowhere on his first carry, the Steelers had wide receivers Emmanuel Sanders (right) and Antonio Brown (left) split wide, both of them running fly patterns.

The free safety trailed Sanders, and Brown flat-out burned Chiefs cornerback Sean Smith down the left sideline. The result was a 49-yard completion, and Roethlisberger looked like he was throwing that way the whole time.

He looked comfortable. The playcall was a good one, considering the situation - a double-tight end formation on second-and-long. The Steelers sprung on the Chiefs' defense right away; aggressive and confident.

In all the effort the Steelers have taken this offseason to establish themselves as a physical running team, it's a wonder if that message wasn't delivered for the sake of using it to set up these kinds of plays. Roethlisberger doesn't appear to have the option to check into long routes - and protection continues to be an issue - but Brown and Sanders are faster and more elusive than their opponents seem to think in many games. Rookie wide receiver Markus Wheaton is a dangerous inside receiver but he's been making plays outside the numbers this preseason, and seems to improve with each game.

What does any of this mean for the Steelers' regular season opener against the Titans?

We don't really know, and that's exactly what the Steelers want to establish. Offensive coordinator Todd Haley - sometimes to a fault - wants to have that element of surprise at all times.

The passing game's impressive performance wasn't as much a surprise to those who have watched it, but the Chiefs' secondary looked a bit miffed.

Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger went 13-for-19 for 166 yards and a touchdown in a half of work.

Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger looked by far and away the best he has this preseason.

If the third preseason game - a 26-20 (OT) loss to the Chiefs - is an indication of how well Roethlisberger will perform this year, good things are ahead for the Steelers.

In the second year of his immersion in Todd Haley's offense, and third game this preseason, Roethlisberger's command seemed powerful, and quick, accurate decisions blended with the sense of spontaneity he adds himself. Roethlisberger was 13-for-19 for 166 yards and a touchdown pass - a 15-yarder on a broken play to running back Jonathan Dwyer, the Steelers first touchdown scored by the first team this preseason.

While Roethlisberger was the clear choice, we wanted to add cornerback Cortez Allen to this group. In his first game this preseason, Allen led the Steelers in tackles, and broke up a pass. He underwent knee surgery early in training camp, and appears to be healthy enough to regain his starting position when the Steelers take on the Tennessee Titans in Week 1 of the regular season Sept. 8.

Regardless of the reason for Everest's sudden termination last season, the Steelers' special teams units played better at this point in the preseason than the current group is. They've allowed a kickoff return touchdown, punt and field goal attempts to be blocked and have fumbled a punt return.

The Steelers sometimes need an entire regular season to allow a punt and field goal to be blocked, give up a kickoff return touchdown and fumble a punt.

Danny Smith's Steelers have managed to do that in just three preseason games.

Wins and losses don't matter to fans in the preseason, but special teams gaffes sure do. There's a significant problem here, and as Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said in his press conference following the team's 26-20 (OT) loss to the Chiefs, they are running out of time to fix those problems.

Those are all significant events in the course of a normal game. They're big boosts in terms of breaking open a tight game, or giving one team a jolt of momentum. The fact the Steelers are continuously on the wrong side of plays that are, statistically speaking, rare occurrences is beyond troubling.

Whether it's a personnel issue or a coaching issue, the Steelers have let go of their special teams coach in preseason before - last year they parted ways with Al Everest suddenly. Not to suggest Smith should be terminated, but clearly, the group under his watch has performed far worse than Everest's did.

These games count pretty quick, and it's a fair assumption Tuesday's first cut list will include several players who did not get the job done on special teams over the team's first three preseason games.

Jones was returning an interception that was later overturned on review.

Amid an electrifying preseason campaign, Jones's injury came on perhaps his best highlight yet. While the play was overruled, he showed the kind of playmaking ability the Steelers wanted when they selected him in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft.

Oddly, the last time the Steelers played the Chiefs, quarterback Ben Roethlisberger left the game with a chest injury and was evaluated at an area hospital.

No word is available early Sunday morning as to the extent of the injury, but as the rest of Steeler Nation holds its breath waiting for news, so shall we.
