It's common for fringe players, such as Pittsburgh's own John Malecki, to bounce around the league. But when a player finally makes the final cut out of training camp, he might take a moment to celebrate just a little. Unfortunately for Malecki, one day after making the Steelers regular season roster, he was released in favor of fellow reserve lineman, Cody Wallace .

Every player on the fringes of the NFL has to put up with the ups and downs of being released, being signed and then being released again. However, after a few stops, it's probably desirable to find at least some stability in your career. I have to wonder if former Steelers offensive lineman John Malecki was feeling like he may have been afforded a chance to play an entire NFL season for one team when he survived the final 22 cuts on Saturday.

Malecki, a Pittsburgh native and Pitt football alumnus, was an undrafted free agent in 2010. And starting with Tennessee, he was signed and released upwards of a half dozen times during his first three years out of college. In October of last season, he finally got promoted from the very fringes of the league (the Steelers practice squad) to his hometown team's active roster. Unfortunately, Malecki was waived a week later, before being promoted back to the 53 man roster for good at the end of November.

It must be difficult for a player of Malecki's status, an unproven reserve offensive lineman, to have to sit through the long days of training camp, wondering if and when he'll get that dreadful knock on the door.

Heck, I'm afraid to log on to MLB.com to check the score of the Pirates game. I can't imagine how stressful is to try and make a living in a profession, where, depending on your boss's opinion of your talents, you may have to either buy a house or rent a hotel room.

Getting promoted to the main squad in October is one thing, but to survive the stress of a month-long training camp--including four preseason games--and find out that you made the final cut? That has to come with at least a bit of cache, right? The coaches spent an entire spring and summer evaluating your talents and have determined you're good enough to go to war with on Sunday afternoons.

Maybe a player in Malecki's position never truly takes a deep breath, but he had to be feeling pretty good about earning a decent paycheck this season as a backup in his home city.

Unfortunately for Malecki, Cody Wallace, a player with a similar sign/release history, was found more desirable by Pittsburgh after playing in eight games a year ago for the Buccaneers.

I hope for Malecki's sake, he just rented property and didn't buy.

This kind of thing isn't uncommon for players on the fringes of the league, but to get cut for a guy with a similar resume? That has to sting just a little.

As Neal Coolong points out in this piece, Wallace probably offers a bit more position flexibility for a unit that can certainly use it. But there was that whole month of August and those preseason games where Malecki's talents were found to be suitable in the coaches eyes.

It's tough being a player on the fringes of the NFL.

Maybe one of these days, John Malecki can put down roots somewhere.

Two players expected to blossom in their second seasons in Pittsburgh, didn't survive final cuts; but they each found new homes before the season began.

While the NFL, the players and the fans continue to debate the importance of preseason football, it is crucial to undrafted, and often mid- to late-round draft picks. They are playing not only to be noticed by their own team, but by the rest of the league as well - to build a portfolio.

Alameda Ta'amu and Marshall McFadden played well at times leaving them as top candidates for open reserve roles on the depth chart, and both fit the description of players fighting for their careers on every snap amongst stiff competition. Neither did enough to survive final cuts, but they did enough to find new employment elsewhere.

Wallace was added and John Malecki was dropped from the Steelers roster Sunday.

In lieu of selecting their own fourth round picks, and keeping them on the roster, the Steelers signed free agent Cody Wallace Sunday, a former 2008 fourth round pick of the San Francisco 49ers. To make room, they released John Malecki, a back-up center who was on the roster for roughly 24 hours.

Why?

Most likely, position flexibility.

Despite the fact Wallace has appeared in nine career games - eight of which came last year when he was with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers - he's able to play all three interior offensive line positions, which is something the Steelers needed.

Wallace had layovers with the Jets, Lions and Texans as well, before ending up with the Buccaneers. The Steelers are the fifth team he's been with in six NFL seasons. He bounced around from practice squad to practice squad, ending up in Tampa Bay under new coach Greg Schiano.

Wallace overcame the deaths of both of his parents at a young age - his father died in prison from complications from alcoholism, and his mother died of a condition "doctors couldn't explain" according to the San Francisco Gate in an article written after he was selected in the 2008 NFL Draft.

It would seem the decision to cut Malecki and bring Wallace onto the active roster was done to solidify an offensive line lacking somewhat in depth. Outside of the five starters, Kelvin Beachum and Guy Whimper are (for now) the back-up tackles and Wallace appears to be the lone interior back-up - although Beachum can be seen as a replacement inside as well.

The Steelers elected not to re-sign three-position reserve Doug Legursky this offseason. He signed with the Bills, and subsequently, suffered a knee injury that might keep him on the sideline for a bit. He will not need surgery, however, and has not been placed on injured reserve.

It would seem Wallace is the kind of character guy the Steelers have sought out this offseason. He's experienced at three positions, and has been in the league for five seasons. While Malecki is the local product who's come up with the team, it seems Wallace's versatility made him more desirable.

The Steelers parted ways with two mid-round draft picks from the past two drafts, while adding two offensive linemen and two outside linebackers among others to 2013 Practice Squad.

Update: What was your favorite Alameda Ta'amu/Marshall McFadden moment? Both have found their way out west since being released by the Steelers.

Update: The Denver Broncos have claimed former Steelers OLB Adrian Robinson after he was released by the Eagles in their final cuts.

The Steelers have announced the signings of their 2013 Practice Squad: The roster itself was something of a surprise, so the practice squad, eight members strong, is liable to contain a surprise or two.

Offensive linemen Chris Hubbard and Joe Long, running back Alvester Alexander, defensive lineman Brian Arnfelt, outside linebackers Alan Baxter and Terence Garvin, defensive back Devin Smith and wide receiver Justin Brown.

You'll notice nose tackle Alameda Ta'amu is not on this list. That's something of a surprise, considering the Steelers traded up in the 2012 NFL Draft to select him in the fourth round, only to have him not even a part of the organization a little over a year later.

He wasn't the only wasted draft pick. Also not retained is 2013 fifth round pick Terry Hawthorne. After spending some time on the injured list this preseason, Hawthorne apparently didn't do enough to stick around.

It's possible either Ta'amu or Hawthorne did not clear waivers and will sign to another team's 53-man roster. Such are the risks of releasing younger players.

Running back Alvester Alexander is probably the biggest surprise of the eight who signed. Little more than an afterthought, the small-school rookie had 43 yards on 15 carries this preseason.

Some notable exceptions are OL Mike Golic Jr., LB Marshall McFadden, CB Josh Victorian and S Ross Ventrone.

It's the last event of the preseason, and also one of the most popular of the year.

The draw to discussing and predicting teams' practice squad signings each year is something of a mystery, but it puts a nice touch on the last seven or so weeks of painstakingly following our teams. It lessens the blow somewhat from the release of younger players who had long odds, but seemed to do something positive each day.

At some point, some of these players may end up on the active roster. Some may get released the Saturday before their first game to make room for someone else.

Such is the life of a practice squad member.

Jonathan Dwyer is gone, and five tight ends are here. Other than that, it's hard to gauge the 2013 Pittsburgh Steelers, based on final cuts and preseason performance.

The Steelers made their final cuts on Saturday, and their leading rusher from a year ago, Jonathan Dwyer, is gone. Their heir apparent to Casey Hampton, Alameda Ta'amu, is gone. Their tall receiver is here, but it's not veteran Plaxico Burress, and it's not rookie Justin Brown. It's someone I didn't even have on my radar until he caught the team's first offensive touchdown of the preseason - Derek Moye - and he may have only won a roster spot simply because he showed hustle on Thursday when he ran down a defensive back who picked off Landry Jones.

Pittsburgh now has five tight ends on the roster, but the top two--Heath Miller and Matt Spaeth-- won't see the field until perhaps Halloween.

Which running back will open the season as the starter? If it's Felix Jones, that would be amazing, since just last week, I kind of made fun of the team's acquisition of him in this article. If it is him, that might force me to eat some crow, but would it inspire confidence in even the most die-hard fan?

Of course, I do realize it's 2013, and at the end of the day, the team will go where Ben Roethlisberger takes it. However, thanks to the very light treading that coaches do in the preseason these days with regards to using starters, I really have no idea how well Roethlisberger will mesh with Antonio Brown, Emmanuel Sanders, and yes, even David Paulson (Lord, help me) in his second season orchestrating Todd Haley's offensive philosophy.

I'm not that worried about Ta'amu losing his shot as Hampton's replacement. Maybe Steve McLendon will prove to be the real deal in his first full season as a starting nose tackle, but again, this doesn't necessarily instill me with confidence.

Troy Polamalu is flying around like it's 2010, and LaMarr Woodley is looking like someone who is trying to impress that anonymous teammate, but what about Jason Worilds? Did he do enough to seize total control of James Harrison's old spot? First round pick Jarvis Jones looked quite impressive in the preseason, but he fell on a football and had to be taken to the hospital. He's fine, but......just but.

I didn't get a real feel for the team by watching any of the preseason games, but like Ivan Cole touched on in this piece, preseason football isn't necessarily a place to do research for the upcoming season. And that might explain why I fell asleep during three of the games, with the exception being the second exhibition game against the Redskins. You know, the one where I thought Dwyer made a strong case for himself as the opening day starter at running back?

So, anyway.

I have no idea where I'm going with this piece, but I find that fitting, because I think it captures very succinctly how I feel about where the 2013 Pittsburgh Steelers season is heading.......I simply don't know.

But I hear that Le'Veon Bell is pretty good.

Steelers wide receiver Derek Moye made the team in wake of his father's death just a few weeks before the start of training camp. His effort, as noted with a team-high 10 catches and 149 yards was overshadowed by running down a defensive back 70 yards in the Steelers' loss to Carolina.

Steelers wide receiver Derek Moye was a 6-foot tall 12-year-old equipment manager for the Rochester Rams. His future high school coach noticed him then, writes Beaver County Times reporter Chris Bradford.

"He's a great character kid. Never in trouble, very humble," Gene Matsook told Bradford. "He put in a lot of time and work and he has the height and athleticism to make it. We're pretty happy for him."

Moye made the Steelers' roster, edging out rookie sixth-round pick Justin Brown for the Steelers' final wide receiver spot - a position possibly vacated by a shoulder injury to Plaxico Burress that put him on injured reserve for the season.

It's an odd twist of fate for Moye, who was 14 years old when Burress notched career-highs in receptions (78) and yards (1,325) for the Steelers' 10-5-1 team - winning the first-ever AFC North championship. Burress was 25 that year, the same age as Moye. Burress had two full NFL seasons under his belt by that point, Moye hasn't played a down in a regular season game.

Moye's 6-foot-5 frame could be mistaken for Burress's lanky body, but Moye's effort has made up for the fact he doesn't have the level of talent Burress had. In fact, it may have been Moye's effort that pushed him ahead of Brown for that final roster spot.

An errant Landry Jones pass intended for Moye was intercepted by Panthers defensive back Josh Norman at Carolina's 8-yard line. Moye ran him down all the way back at Pittsburgh's 22 and made the tackle.

It was reminiscent of a play he made back at Rochester. Quarterback Dan Camp spoke to Bradford about their high school days, with one play standing out.

"It was right before halftime, the kid from Duquesne came down with it but Derek stripped him at the 1-yard line and scored," Camp said. "We ended up losing but it goes to show you how, like the other night against Carolina, he never gave up. It wasn't a touchdown but it's still my fondest memory."

Camp also said Moye's father, Jermaine "Jerry" "B.B." Moye, was his biggest fan.

Jerry passed away July 3, just three weeks before the Steelers began training camp in Latrobe, Pa. He never got to see his son make the Steelers' roster. He was just 52-years-old.

It's easy to say perhaps the silver lining in Burress's injury - very possibly a career-ender - was the opening for a good kid working hard amid horrible personal circumstances. It's maybe insensitive to say Burress, at age 36, going over for the year was a blessing for Moye.

It's also hard to ignore either of those angles. There's little reason to believe Moye was added to the roster out of sympathy of the loss of his father, or even because he put in the effort to run down a defensive back in the second half of a meaningless preseason game. Moye led the Steelers in catches (10) and receiving yards (149) this preseason. There's more than just his height keeping him on this team.

Common opinion would be no one has seen Burress run down a defensive back in a regular season game, let alone a preseason game - even when he was 25. Perhaps spurred on by the ghost of his father, Moye did. He did a lot this preseason.

And he made the team. Even if he doesn't catch one pass in his career, what he's accomplished is worthy of remembrance.

With Miller's presence but inability to play, the Steelers stocked up on tight ends, and they may not be done moving them around yet.

Heath Miller has officially become the 2013 version of former Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall.

He's been following the path for several months now. Both tore ACLs late in the previous season. Both started training camp on the PUP list and were basically held out of all of the preseason the following year - although Mendenhall did come off the PUP list sooner than Miller did.

And now, both made the roster without continuing on the PUP or landing on injured reserve. But as Mendenhall didn't play until Week 5, it doesn't appear Miller will return any sooner than his former teammate did.

Miller's current status, as well as that of Matt Spaeth (expected to be placed on the IR Sunday, possibly with a designation to return) led the Steelers to keep five tight ends - a number that will almost certainly be reduced in the very near future.

Spaeth's impending designation will take him off the roster, leaving the Steelers with four tight ends, three of whom - David Paulson, David Johnson and Michael Palmer - are game-ready. That won't stand in the Steelers' way of making a move at the position.

New England's Jake Ballard is expected to be something of a hot commodity on the free agent market Sunday, and it's possible the Steelers take a sniff around. The amount they'd be willing to spend is up in the air. Depending on how comfortable they feel with Johnson - coming off a torn ACL of his own from the preseason of 2012 - as the strongside blocker, they still may feel compelled to bring in another blocker.

Certainly, it's not a requirement, but Paulson struggled as an in-line blocker, and Johnson has had little game experience in the last year. They may want to shore up the group.

Palmer's presence on the roster may simply be as insurance in case they're unable to make a deal for another tight end. However it ends up with making a move, the Steelers aren't going to wait long; it's a game week. They kick off with Tennessee in approximately one week.
