It's unlikely the NFL will recognize Roethlisberger in a similar way for his one punt downed inside the 1-yard line against Cleveland, but it shows some results from Roethlisberger's "by all means necessary" approach during the team's hot streak.

In a tongue-in-cheek nod to Roethlisberger's beautiful 29-yard pooch punt that pinned Cleveland inside its one-yard line, Peter King named him one of Monday Morning Quarterback's Special Teams Players of the Week.

Ben Roethlisberger, quarterback/quick-kick punter. Pittsburgh. Play of the day. Fourth-and-18, Cleveland 29, midway through the fourth quarter. Roethlisberger in the shotgun. Takes the snap. Pooch-punts the ball toward the left pylon on the goal line. It bounces. Emmanuel Sanders sprints down. Downs it at the Cleveland 1-yard line. Thing of beauty. In his other job Sunday, Roethlisberger threw two touchdown passes.

It was an outstanding kick, to be sure, and Roethlisberger runs his 'Weekly Awards Won' streak to two. He was named AFC Offensive Player of the Week after his performance against Detroit in Week 11.

The "by all means necessary" approach Roethlisberger has added to the "one week at a time" mantra he's been repeating since the team's 2-6 start is starting to blend together.

It's contagious, as is his penchant for winning league honors.

You can take to the bank William Gay's receipt of AFC Defensive Player of the Week award after a sack and forced fumble led to a touchdown, as well as an interception he returned for the game-sealing touchdown against Cleveland.

But they're taking it one game at a time. One award at a time.

(nod to reader David for pointing this out)

It doesn't look good for the Steelers' fourth-year nose tackle. He left FirstEnergy Stadium on crutches. Back-up cornerback Curtis Brown appears to have suffered a significant knee injury as well.

Steelers nose tackle Steve McLendon rolled on the ground after a play in the first half against the Cleveland Browns in Week 12. a camera shot of his face seemed to indicate two things; 1. McLendon was in some pain, and 2. McLendon seemed to know exactly what the issue was.

Never a good thing to see on a player's face.

McLendon will have an MRI Monday, and the results are expected to indicate a broken ankle, which would likely place him on injured reserve, ending his 2013 season. It may not be broken, but ligament damage to an ankle can be worse than a break. Either way, it's a certainty McLendon will miss at least Thursday's game at Baltimore.

Curtis Brown also suffered what appeared to be a significant knee injury. With a boom mic right by where Brown laid on the turf, hearing his agonized voice strongly suggested he is going to miss some time.

Rashard Mendenhall tore his ACL untouched while running on the field at FirstEnergy Stadium in 2011, and it appeared the same thing happened to Brown.

Expect some roster moves to be made this week. With little time to prepare for the Ravens, the Steelers will likely plan to start Al Woods at nose tackle - he had two sacks filling in for McLendon in mop-up duty against Cleveland.

Pro Football Focus painted positive pictures of Polamalu and Worilds, negatives ones of Jones, Heyward and Taylor in Steelers' four-takeaway victory over Browns.

With proper credence given to the fact the Browns were stuck in passing mode for the entire fourth quarter, the Steelers moved Troy Polamalu back to safety in their 27-11 win over Cleveland Sunday.

The result was the best performance Polamalu has had in a few weeks.

Having a less structured role, Polamalu flew around the ball, and made plays. He forced two fumbles, nearly caused a third, and was a big part of the Steelers' best defensive performance this season.

Pro Football Focus, a football play evaluation web site, gave Polamalu a +5.6 grade, the highest on the team, for his efforts. He led all defensive players, a full two points ahead of Jason Worilds - his +3.3 is a career-high.

These grades should be taken in a more general sense, as PFF often re-grades them upon receiving access to the all-22 film from the NFL. However, having watched the game, it seems likely Polamalu's and Worilds's scores will remain close to where they are now.

Offensively, Heath Miller, Antonio Brown and David DeCastro led the offense with +1.3 grades. Ben Roethlisberger and Fernando Velasco receiving +1.2 grades.

Marcus Gilbert was the low man on offense, scoring a -2.5 (which seems like something that will increase upon a second viewing).

Jarvis Jones (-3.8) and Ike Taylor (-2.5) were the low men on defense, and Cameron Heyward received a -1.3. It will be interesting to see how Heyward's grade fluctuates, because more than the others, that doesn't seem accurate.

Incidentally, Browns right tackle Mitchell Schwartz received a positive grade of +0.6 for his performance. It's unclear how that's possible, but upon review, we expect that to change.

It was certainly important to secure the win, but how they did it may speak volumes about the state of this team.

So, what did we learn today? Let's go over a few items one by one.

Can we take the idea of a team 'in decline' off the table? They certainly are not as good at present as they were a few years ago, but that is, as the saying goes, relative. But more importantly, everything about their performance is trending in the wrong direction for 'decline' to be an accurate assessment. This team is not just more fortunate in its play, it is clearly getting better in just about all phases. They go into the Thanksgiving weekend as relevant as they have been at any point in the 2013 season, with the possibility of a playoff berth and even a division title being discussed, not just as mathematical options, but as serious and sober outcomes. I doubt if any of their remaining opponents are licking their chops at the prospect of having to face and take down this team.

Ben Roethlisberger and the offensive line

You really have to discuss them in tandem. The great heavyweight boxing champion Muhammad Ali once said upon being asked after a fight in his prime, how often he had been hit, "He didn't hit me, but he touched me twice." That came to mind in watching Ben today. He got touched once. He's been sacked once in two games, going against two well thought of defensive units. Some credit can be given to the no huddle, but the maturation of the offensive line has to be a consideration as well. What Ben has demonstrated these past two weeks is when given a reasonable amount of time he can be lethal. Right now the Steelers passing game is essentially unstoppable by the opposition. They can only hope for misfires and drops. If you want to get nitpicky, the running game failed to produce a 100 yard rusher. But the generation of rushing yards is a league wide problem. And besides, more often than not they were able to move the ball on the ground when they needed to. I was impressed by Bell. Weren't you?

Velasco

The fact that this guy was sitting in church and not on a football field the first week of the season tells you a lot about what ails the NFL in terms of how its economic structure serves to drive a lot of quality players to the margins. During today's broadcast Velasco was mentioned as being thought of as the MVP of the offensive line by his teammates. That sounds about right to me. All things considered his story is rather remarkable.

William Gay

These are tough times for Gay bashers. Only Troy is playing better than he is among the defensive backs. Carnell Lake clearly brings out the best in this kid, who is playing as well or better than he did in 2011. Fourteen of the twenty seven points scored today are his either directly or indirectly. Combined with Will Allen's efforts this is a very good year for prodigal children. Can't wait to see what we might be able to get out of Matt Spaeth.

Jason Worilds

Still think he's a bust? One week might be an anomaly, two weeks could be a trend. The idea of a three man rotation at outside linebacker was viewed as a temporary tactic to help Jarvis Jones' acclimation to what appeared to be his anointing as the next great Steeler linebacker. Now it may become a dilemma. How do you justify keeping any of these three (with Woodley) off the field? And if economics dictates Worilds departure as so many of us have assumed, do you feel good about this occurring just as it seems that he is hitting his stride? And while we're on the subject, how you feeling about Ziggy Hood about now?

Antonio, Emmanuel and Heath

Was talking earlier about the passing game being unstoppable. Cotchery, who was tearing it up the last three weeks was an absolute non factor today. I don't recall Wheaton being targeted. Didn't matter. Miller had a day that would be described as more Heath-like. Brown stepped up against who many view as one of the best corners in the league. Sanders may have been the best receiver on the field for the Steelers. The bubble screens actually looked good today.

Troy Polamalu and Heyward

Demonstrated his unique brand of leadership with his wildly disruptive play, resulting in two turnovers. Cam Heyward is showing that he could be the heir to, dare I say it, Aaron Smith.

After a first quarter of sparring with the Browns, the offense and defense put together a strong mutually supportive effort for the first time in a long time. There is still a long way to go. In fact, the celebration of this victory should be coming to an end just about now as the Ravens await, and you know what that means. But with strong performances in all three phases and a turnover ratio of 4-0, we start the holiday week with a strong, comfortable win and can look forward to future challenges with more anticipation than dread.

Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown may left the biggest imprint on his best individual season in his career with a 92-yard catch and a touchdown against Cleveland's Joe Haden. Brown went over 1,000 yards for the season, and set a franchise record with his 11th consecutive game with five or more catches.

A montage at one point in the second half showed Browns cornerback Joe Haden battling step-for-step with Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown.

For football purists, it was chilling. Two phenomenal athletes at the height of their respective positions doing battle in a way the game was meant to be played. At one point, Haden came deep into Pittsburgh's sideline and exchanged a word or two with Brown as he spoke with Steelers coach Mike Tomlin.

Tomlin's reaction wasn't as angry as a team might think. Brown didn't go after him, either. It almost seemed...respectful.

The level of competition was a topic of conversation leading into the Steelers' Week 12 game against Cleveland. "Little Brother" was building up to trade punches with a fully-staffed "Big Brother." Ben Roethlisberger would be on the field for this game, unlike the last time Cleveland hosted the Steelers. And both teams had playoff aspirations.

While it was obvious by the third quarter Little Brother was not quite there, and was in for a rough afternoon, Brown and Haden continued to battle. This is the same Haden who held Bengals WR A.J. Green to seven yards on two catches. His length, his athleticism, his overall make-up to play the cornerback position are rivaled by very few, if any, in the NFL.

And Brown matched him - at worst - punch-for-punch.

It was good to see they were aware of who the other one was during the game. Never over-the-top or penalty-worthy or anything like that. Brown got the best of him on a fly down the left sideline when Haden peek and stuck just a little too long toward the backfield. Brown managed to hang onto the ball (a bit underthrown), a big-time play that woke the Steelers' up from their road woes.

The Steelers' best offensive skill player vs. the Browns' most talented player. And the Steelers won.

It was all Steelers after that.

That catch made up 41 of Brown's 92 yards on the day - the 11th consecutive game in which Brown has at least five catches or more, a Steelers franchise record. He re-directed any opportunity to take praise for his performance, often repeating "team win" in an interview with the media after the game.

That all may be true, but it was an even bigger individual win for Brown.

Whether it's addition by subtraction or just the development of a few players, the Steelers defense looked tough and even explosive in a rout of Cleveland.

Maybe it's not about age.

The young Shamarko Thomas goes down, Will Allen plays well in two straight games, including a great open field tackle on the Browns' opening drive of the second half, forcing a punt.

He also recovered a fumble and nearly scored after William Gay nearly killed Jason Campbell on a sack in the third quarter.

Brett Keisel goes out, Cameron Heyward continues his rapid development, clearly emerging as a future star on this defense, while Ziggy Hood builds up some capital for his resume.

LaMarr Woodley, one of the league's best pass rushers is on the bench two straight games, and Jason Worilds doesn't seize his opportunity; he grabs it by the throat and chokes the marrow out of it.

Steve McLendon goes down, Heyward gets a sack from his nose tackle position.

All the while, Worilds racked up an eye-popping 10 quarterback hits in the team's last two games.

This is addition by subtraction. It's the dividends from a late first round pick three years ago and a second round pick four years ago starting to pay, and it has nothing to do with a high draft pick next year.

How's that go? It was in you all along?

With the Steelers' defense gaining momentum, that Black and Gold Brick Road may lead to the postseason. It may also lead to a run up the leaderboard in terms of statistics. If Campbell, a savvy veteran, wasn't quick to get rid of the ball (despite his obvious pain), Worilds may have equalled his career statistics just off Browns right tackle Mitchell Schwartz. A team plagued with a lack of pass rush for over two seasons is landing - and landing often. Adjustments made to the per-down assignments of Jarvis Jones are dramatically increasing his rush production from "nothing" to "something." Heyward is rushing from three gaps, straight up and off stunts, and is a load to handle - even highly touted pass protector Joe Thomas struggled with Heyward at times.

Between Heyward, Worilds and Jones, the energy level is through the roof - it's like a young Brenston Bucker, Greg Lloyd and Chad Brown flying around the field (energy, not production...yet).

It's weird how it can work, but perhaps for the first time in the injury-riddled last two and a half seasons in Pittsburgh, injuries are becoming an asset.

Plenty of dominant defensive performances in Pittsburgh's 27-11 whipping of AFC North rival Cleveland in Week 12, including one that will likely be recognized by the league.

Winners

Jason Worilds - SIX quarterback hits. He had seven this season heading into the game (according to Pro Football Focus). Unofficially, barring a huge game from someone else, Worilds will lead the NFL in quarterback hits. Read that sentence again. It's kinda fun.

William Gay - A pick six and a huge sack that forced a fumble leading to another touchdown. Could have been Gay's best career game. We called it for a teammate of his last week, so we'll do it again...Eight words: Aye Eff Cee Defensive Player of the Week.

Cameron Heyward - It seems like he gets better each week. And he wasn't going up against Mitchell Schwartz here (with all due respect to Worilds), Heyward had Joe Thomas. Heyward may have even won the battle overall. He had a tackle for loss and a hit on the quarterback, and was oftentimes hot in pursuit of a ball carrier along with Worilds.

Troy Polamalu - Two forced fumbles for Polamalu, leading the defensive spark that led to a season-high four takeaways. He did it more mentally than anything else, patiently lining up his attack as ball carriers were wrapping up and leaving the player prone to be picked.

Ben Roethlisberger - A controlled and sustainable performance. Like last week, there were still some throws he'd like back, and it wasn't a perfect performance, but the general absence of imperfection along with a suddenly thriving offensive line revealed a very dangerous passing attack.

Losers

Ike Taylor - Without getting too down about an otherwise outstanding performance, it's fair to ask Taylor if Josh Gordon was on his Fantasy team. A horrendous performance by Taylor in this game. Gordon's a good player, but Taylor basically didn't stop him all game. He finished with 14 catches on 17 targets for 237 yards and a touchdown. And just so Taylor could make sure none of us forgot about him, gave up one last throw at the end where it seemed like he would rather have been somewhere else.

The Steelers physically beat down AFC North upstart Cleveland, scoring a pivotal 27-11 win over the Browns in Cleveland in Week 12.

It was as "Steelers football as it gets."

Behind a relentless blitz and a sharp offense (and even a few plays in the secondary), the Steelers crippled the host Cleveland Browns in Week 12, overpowering them to a 27-11 victory.

It could have been the most complete win of the season - the Steelers' third win in a row and fifth in their last seven games after an 0-4 start. Steelers outside linebacker Jason Worilds completely obliterated whatever semblance of pass protection Cleveland threw at him, as he made his second consecutive start on the defensive right side in place of injured LaMarr Woodley. Worilds has 10 quarterback hits in the past two games, both on the left side in place of Woodley.

Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger threw - and even kicked - his way through Cleveland's defense, completing 22 of 34 passes for 217 yards, two touchdowns and his second straight game without a turnover. He even punted in a short-field situation, pinning Cleveland deep in their own territory.

Deep in their own territory is what Cleveland was in all game. The Steelers left little doubt who the more physical team was in a battle with one of the league's top statistical units. The Browns defense played well, but dealing with short field based off offensive ineptitude and three turnovers - their third straight game with like offensive performances - they didn't have much rest.

Neither did starting quarterback Jason Campbell, who was chased all over the field, by Worilds in particular. He took a seat for the remainder of the game after a savage hit from cornerback Will Gay on a blitz. Strong safety Will Allen scooped up the fumble and nearly returned it for a touchdown, a play that blew the game wide open. Campbell did not return to the game, and reports indicated he had a head injury.

Gay got Campbell's back-up, Brandon Weeden, in the fourth quarter too. Weeden telegraphed an out throw to the right side, Gay calmly picked it off and ran 21 yards to paydirt.

It was the first Steelers defensive touchdown in 18 games.

For as old-school as this game was billed to be - two rivals of equal ability battling with postseason ramifications on the line - it turned out to be exactly that. Old school, as in, the 2000s, when the Steelers completely dominated Cleveland. There was some thought that may be changing, but Pittsburgh showed they're more of a legitimate team than the overmatched Browns.

It was Cleveland's fifth loss in their last six games, and the Steelers' fifth win in their last seven. It's just unfortunate for Pittsburgh the team started off 0-4.The Steelers heated up as the weather got cold, and find themselves squarely in the mix of the AFC's final playoff spot.

It won't be easy for the Steelers moving ahead, though. A short week brings with it the challenge of preparing for the Baltimore Ravens, victors over the New York Jets Sunday, giving Pittsburgh its second consecutive division road game against a playoff-hopeful team with the same record.

A short week isn't good for injuries, and while the Steelers may get Brett Keisel and LaMarr Woodley back, it wouldn't seem likely Steve McLendon will be available. McLendon injured his left ankle in the second quarter and did not return.
