There wasn't much chatter across social media after the Pittsburgh Steelers were handed their fourth defeat of the season to the lowly New York Jets.

Compared to the past three weeks of NFL action that saw the Pittsburgh Steelers rattle off three straight victories over stellar opponents, you could hear a pin drop on social media following the team's loss to the New York Jets on Sunday.

Gone were the pictures of Steelers players posing with Justin Beiber after the team's Bible study. Instead of what's usually a busy and happening place following a victory, the players and their social media platforms were left barren and desolate.

The fans filled the empty space with plenty of anger and venom directed at everyone from Shaun Suisham to Ben Roethlisberger and, of course, Todd Haley and Mike Tomlin.

Nonetheless, not all players remained silent, and the ones who did take to Twitter provided some insight into what the thoughts of the players might be as they now prepare for a game against the Tennessee Titans on Monday Night Football.

They say life on the road in the NFL isn't easy, and that's especially the case for the 2014 Steelers who posted another stinker away from Heinz Field with a 20-13 loss at MetLife Stadium in Week 10 to a Jets team that came into the game with a 1-8 record.

It's pretty standard for most American families to save up for an entire year to take one happy and memorable vacation away from home. Unfortunately for the 2014 Pittsburgh Steelers, it looks like they might be mirroring your typical American family when you consider their overall performance on the road thus far, with their 20-13 loss at MetLife Stadium against a lowly 1-8 Gang Green squad being the latest example of their National Lampoon Vacation-level ineptitude.

So far this season, the Steelers (6-4 overall), are 2-3 away from Heinz Field, which isn't awful in and of itself. However, when you examine things closer, you begin to realize just how difficult, depressing and downright lonely life has been on the road for the Black-and-Gold.

On September 21, Pittsburgh traveled to Bank of America Stadium and trounced a then-undefeated Panthers team, 37-19, before a national audience on Sunday Night Football. That impressive Week 3 victory inspired hope and confidence in a team that sorely needed it.

Unfortunately, now five games into the road portion of the Steelers 2014 schedule, it appears they blew their entire wad on that victory in Carolina and have played as if completely devoid of talent and motivation in the other four games away from Heinz Field. If you take away that victory at Carolina in Week 3 and just examine their performance overall on the road, it's downright frightening.

Subtract those 37 points against the Panthers, and Pittsburgh has a grand-total of 46 points in the other four road games this season.

The Steelers' offense scored three touchdowns at Bank of America Stadium that night, but in the 16 other quarters played away from Heinz before and since, the offense has totaled only three touchdowns, with two of them coming in garbage time of otherwise ugly performances--a 26 yard strike from Ben Roethlisberger to Lance Moore in a 31-10 loss at Cleveland in Week 6 and a Roethlisberger to Martavis Bryant 80-yard bomb with 1:16 remaining in the just-concluded 20-13 loss to the Jets on Sunday at MetLife Stadium.

The Steelers have fallen behind in every one of their five road games in 2014, and in their three losses, they trailed by at least 17 points in each game.

Of Roethlisberger's 22 touchdown passes, 17 have come at home, with four of his five interceptions occurring on the road.

The Steelers are averaging approximately 16 points per game away from Heinz Field this year but only 11.5 if you take away the impressive 37 point output at Carolina in late September.

Pittsburgh defeated the Jaguars on the road in Week 5, 17-9, but had to fight tooth and nail to secure a victory against maybe the worst team in the NFL, a team that had a rookie quarterback in Blake Bortles who was only making his second NFL start.

It has been said that the Steelers travel better than any other team in the NFL. Sadly, for the 2014 edition, that may only apply to the fans and not the players for whom they cheer-on in NFL stadiums across the country.

They say life on the road is hard, and that's especially the case for the 2014 Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Steelers didn't play terribly in Sunday's loss to the New York Jets, and PFF's grades reflect more a team that didn't make plays.

It was a "blah" game all around from the Steelers, who fell 20-13 to the New York Jets in Week 10. Their initial grades from NFL plays evaluation site Pro Football Focus largely reflect that.

Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger scored a 2.2, equaling outside linebacker James Harrison for the top grade on the team. They were two of only three players to score above 1.0 - tight end Heath Miller earned a 1.2.

The depth of the negative scores wasn't all that severe, which can be seen as a good thing. PFF does an initial grading of every player, and upon access to wider angle footage, the scores are re-evaluated. The site gave a -3.1 to safety Will Allen, a grade we feel, upon our own initial viewing, will move in a more positive direction. The play of safety Mike Mitchell, who earned a -1.8, is likely to be adjusted downward.

The general feeling of these grades, combined with our own second evaluation of the game, feel about right. It wasn't quite as bad as the knee-jerk reaction after the game yesterday made it feel. We initially felt the play of tackles Kelvin Beachum and Marcus Gilbert were not outstanding, but the second viewing shows the struggles the team had in pass protection were more due to the interior line, Maurkice Pouncey (-1.7) and David DeCastro (-1.2). While neither were continuously beaten in the game, they weren't outstanding either.

Jason Worilds had a -2.2, a grade we also feel will be adjusted upward, but overall it wasn't a great game for Worilds either. The Jets did an excellent job in pass protection, and largely stifled a Steelers pass rush that had been playing well the last few weeks.

The Steelers fall out of the seeding after Week 10, but considering they're only a half game behind Cleveland for the division lead and only a half game behind the Bengals for a wild card, they're still very much in the thick of things.

The Steelers' 20-13 loss to the New York Jets put them just out of the top six in the AFC, but they sit just a half game behind both the Browns for the AFC North division lead (currently the fourth seed) and the Bengals for the wild card (currently the sixth seed).

It was a tough loss, but in terms of playoff positioning, the Steelers are still competitive, and since no trophies are awarded for leading the division after 10 games, the situation isn't as dire as many Steelers fans feel it is less than 24 hours after a tough road loss. The Steelers still have two division games remaining, both against Cincinnati (a team struggling right now), and a slate of winnable games as well as a bye week are on deck for the final seven weeks of the NFL season.

The Steelers are at Tennessee on Monday Night Football in Week 11, then are off in Week 12. After that, the season really starts for the Steelers. They're at home in Week 13 to take on the 4-5 Saints, followed by road games at Cincinnati and at Atlanta to kick off December. They finish the season with two home games against playoff contenders in Kansas City and Cincinnati to close out the season.

With six games to go, the line drawn between the contenders and the draft wannabes gets thin in the middle, which is right where the Steelers are.

A big nod to Sander Philipse of Bucs Nation for putting this together.

The Steelers are still in the thick of the AFC Playoff race, sitting a half-game behind Cincinnati for the sixth seed and a half game behind Cleveland for the division lead. It's all muddled at the top and bottom of the AFC North in that regard, but, the team is also currently selecting 19th in the upcoming NFL Draft.

That's little consolation, of course, and it really shows how thin the line is separating the playoff bound teams (Cleveland's half-game advantage stems from having played one less game along with the teams splitting two games against each other this year, and they're currently the fourth seed).

Concerns about the hits Ben Roethlisberger has taken are really the highlight oozing out over the tape upon a second viewing.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Obviously, the knee-jerk reaction here is to fire the coaching staff and cut nearly every player. But a second viewing doesn't necessarily show that's necessary. It actually wasn't as bad as I initially feared. The Steelers' offensive line wasn't as bad as I thought, and the feeling I had immediately after the game was to put three of the five (Marcus Gilbert, David DeCastro and Maurkice Pouncey) in the Losers column, but they collectively didn't play too badly.

But they are indirectly tied to the main problem this team's offense has right now. Ben Roethlisberger is getting hit.

He's getting hit with the ball in his hands. He's getting hit after he throws the ball and he's getting hit at a period of the play in which a personal foul is usually present. In this case, the Steelers' loss against the Jets, there were two of them.

Jason Babin's pass-rush well after the whistle was blown when he shot into Roethlisberger's knees was an even dirtier play than what Mike Mitchell did at the end of the game, so I really don't want to hear anyone (Nick Mangold, ya listenin'?) complaining about dirty play. Babin was going through DeCastro, who wasn't engaging him because the whistle blew. There is no way I'm going to believe Babin thought the play was still ongoing.

The second flag, the one Ben took on James Harrison's first-ever target (although I'm not sure he was trying to throw it to him), Ben was blasted by the defender a solid two steps after he released the ball. That one is more concerning.

It appears Ben sees it coming and he's just getting rid of the ball. The defender illegally hit him, and he'll likely be fined for it, but Ben knew it was coming. It forced a bad throw.

It's hard to wonder why teams are hitting him late like this. Roethlisberger's performance in this game wasn't quite as bad as I had initially thought it was. He wasn't great, but we're again seeing the ill-effects of Roethlisberger getting hit early in the game. All things considered, he wasn't terrible. But he missed a few throws we're used to seeing him make, and he made some bizarre decisions that seemed inspired more by the ghosts floating around his legs and in the landing zone of his right foot.

Roethlisberger has been hit in the past, but never has he taken this many blatantly illegal shots. It's clear to me there's a mandate coming from the opposing team to hit him however possible, because it's obvious he changes with each one. In a game against an arch rival (Baltimore) or a game in which jobs may be lost (the Jets), a fine and a penalty may be acceptable if it renders a significant mental blow to the team's best player.

That's really the main thing I'm taking away from this game. Ben didn't perform quite as badly as I initially thought but those hits, along with a few others, got into his head. The floating pass to Martavis Bryant down the seam was horrible, as was the decision to try to thread the needle to Antonio Brown at the front pylon in the worst goal-line series the team has run all year. They looked more like he was just trying to get rid of the ball. Ben doesn't throw balls away, but both of those should have been intercepted.

Kind of depressing how that ended up being the real limitation of the Jets' weak secondary. They left plays on the field.

Ravens coach John Harbaugh takes a shot at the Steelers. The Ravens have since tried to assign blame to the CBS- TV crew who was in the locker room to film his post-game speech.

From the franchise that can't stop talking about the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Ravens coach John Harbaugh took a moment amid his team's celebration over the Tennessee Titans in Week 10 to point out to his players the Steelers "got their asses beat" by the Jets.

In classic Ravens' fashion, they issued an immediate statement blaming CBS for allegedly not turning cameras off before Harbaugh spoke to the team.

"The comments made by John Harbaugh in the locker room following today's victory over the Titans were meant for Ravens players and coaches only. The CBS-TV crew that was in the locker room was told by Coach Harbaugh that it could not broadcast what he was about to say. When Coach Harbaugh finished talking about various things happening around the NFL and in the AFC North, he told the crew that it could now use what he was going to say. Inexplicably, CBS-TV then aired comments Coach Harbaugh specifically said were not to leave the locker room. CBS-TV immediately pulled the video and apologized to the Ravens." (This statement is from Kevin Byrne, Ravens Senior Vice President of Public and Community Relations.)

This is the same Kevin Byrne who presided over the pro Ray Rice campaign over the summer, including a lengthly personal column pointing out all of Rice's positive attributes. That said, it's difficult to believe now CBS is at fault here.

Unless, of course, the TV crew was supposed to be in the locker room recording players showering, it's difficult to grasp why they were in there, and to what degree Coach Harbaugh can expect cameras to be turned off at his discretion. It would seem more likely he said something factual in the heat of the moment in an effort to show his players what can happen week to week in the NFL.

That would be plausible, but using his team's PR staff (particularly the Pro-Rice staff who otherwise covers the Steelers nearly as extensively as Pittsburgh media do) to attempt to shield what could be condoned if not understood is weak.

Many impressive aspects to this play, but none of them really involve the Steelers free safety. Credit him for a nice broad jump and some serious bravery.

Can't really blame Mike Mitchell for trying to fill in for injured teammate Troy Polamalu, flipping over the kneel-down snap at the end of the Jets' 20-13 win over the Steelers Sunday, but this might be a little overkill.

It's a toss-up for me what the best part of this is. Center Nick Mangold catching Mitchell at the perfect time in the perfect spot to flip him like they're filming a bad martial arts movie; the amazing (but not surprising), deftness and speed of Jets quarterback Michael Vick avoiding a flying Mitchell while everyone else seemed shocked he was in the backfield; or perhaps ex-Steelers offensive lineman Willie Colon, No. 66 for the Jets, being willing to shove his own teammate out of the way as he moves toward Mitchell in what had to be Mitchell's nightmare scenario - the entire Jets offensive line converging on him while he laid on his back without having done anything to affect the play.

Gotta give him props for the try at least. Since Mitchell really didn't factor in positively in this game at all, at least he has this.
