Maxx Williams was the flashy tight end pick-up in this year's NFL draft, but Jesse James flew under the radar which was perfect for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Maxx Williams went 55th overall in this year's draft and the Baltimore Ravens moved up ahead of the Pittsburgh Steelers to make sure they would get him. There was certainly some gamesmanship there to make sure the Ravens wouldn't be on the receiving end of an offensive talent for the next decade. That being said, the situation played out perfectly for the Steelers. Who knows what would have happened if Williams was still there, but Kevin Colbert expressed that Senquez Golson was going to be the Steelers' second round pick even if Williams was there.

There is no denying that Heath Miller is getting older and the Steelers could use tight end depth and a potential replacement for Miller in a few years. They would have been foolish to waste a second round pick on Williams, however, because their tight end needs were far lower than their secondary needs. As the draft progressed, Jesse James, who was projected in many drafts to be a late third round or early fourth round pick, was still on the board when the Steelers were on the clock for their fifth round selection. It was a no-brainer for them as someone who impressed the Steelers earlier this year at the combine.

We have seen it countless times in the past. Chad Pennington being drafted in the first round while Tom Brady was drafted in the sixth round of the 2000 NFL Draft. Arrelious Benn drafted almost 160 spots ahead of Antonio Brown in the 2010 NFL Draft. Sometimes talent can go unseen, and obviously, sometimes scouts are wrong about who will be a "sure hit" at the next level. I think the same will hold true five years from now when we look back at the tight ends from this draft class. I think Jesse James ends up with a better NFL career than Maxx Williams.

Having a bird's eye view of Jesse James, living in State College, PA, I can tell you that he is more versatile than people think. Many folks viewed 2014 as a step back for James, but this had more to do with a struggling offense than regression from James. Penn State's offense last season ranked 107th in the nation. Even still, James finished third on the team in receptions and yards, and led the team in receiving touchdowns. At 6-feet 7-inches, he will be an immediate red zone target for an already explosive Steelers' offensive unit.

In James' first two seasons at Penn State, he was able to learn a pro style offense from Bill O'Brien, who has notoriously worked closely with Rob Gronkowski in New England. This past season, James was asked to stay at home to block more frequently than in years past due to a struggling offensive line. He is a good pass blocker, and he is decent at run support. He does struggle in the perimeter and blocking in the second level. Both of which will be coaching points as the Steelers rely heavily on these types of blocks, especially with a running back like Le'Veon Bell. Fortunately, he will be learning from the likes of James Daniel, Mike Munchak, and Heath Miller. He is raw in these areas, but he will have some excellent teachers.

Now, time to compare Jesse James and Maxx Williams at the 2015 combine:

Many folks are not aware of just how well James performed at this year's combine. He was an early standout, and it is easy to see why. He actually outperformed Maxx Williams in every category except the 40-yd dash and 20-yd shuttle. He was particularly impressive in the broad jump, bench press, and vertical jump as he rated first or second among all of the tight ends that participated. To put it simply, he has the attributes, strength, and raw talent to dominate at the next level. Rob Rang from CBS Sports has James in his 'underrated Rang's Gang' for 2015 saying:

"James, frankly, was under-utilized in Penn State's offense and I think he'll prove more effective in the NFL..."

Maxx Williams will get all the buzz for the Ravens, and much of it is deserved. He put up some impressive numbers on a Minnesota offense that didn't throw the ball very much the last two seasons. Jesse James, however, is going into the perfect situation for the Pittsburgh Steelers. The organization won't be looking for a new top tight end until 2017 or 2018, and by that point, James will be polished in some of the areas he struggles in currently. Being able to have Miller as a mentor and some of the best coaches training him, I think he matures into a suitable blocker. The rest is there for James. His ceiling is way higher than Williams. Does he reach that ceiling? I think so, and that's why he ends up having a better NFL career.

The Steelers offer their thoughts on fifth round selection Jesse James.

By Dale Grdnic

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers are hopeful that huge tight end Jesse James from Penn State, whom they chose in the fifth round Saturday, turns out better than the last one they selected from the Nittany Lions.

Matt Kranchick, who is similar in size to James, went to the Steelers in the sixth round during the 2004 NFL Draft, had just one catch for six yards in eight NFL games from 2004-06. He played for the Steelers from 2004-05 and also played for the New York Giants in 2005 and New England Patriots in 2006.

James, who is from Pittsburgh suburb Glassport and South Allegheny High School, caught 38 passes for 396 yards and three touchdowns this past season. He was used more as a blocker, but Steelers tight ends coach James Daniel believed just for his size alone, the 6-foot-7, 261-pound could be a big red-zone threat.

"He's a guy with great length, (and) he has natural strength to be able to handle the line of scrimmage,'' Daniel said. "He wasn't used a lot as a receiver, (but) he has good strength to block at the line of scrimmage (and) I would think any guy who's 6-7 should be a good red-zone threat.''

Both Daniel and James believed the player was underutilized as a receiver for the Nittany Lions, and Daniel added that nothing seen on video or in person would indicate that James can't become a good NFL receiver. Daniel said he has the talent to be good in all phases of the game.

"In the system we ran, I didn't have a chance to show the type of receiver I was, but I have a shot to do that in the future and show what I can do,'' James said. "The way I can move my body and with my size, the red zone is an area where you want guys with measurables like me.''

James started every game the past two seasons at Penn State and even six as a freshman in 2012 after being an early enrollee and going through spring practice earlier that year. With continued good work habits and improvement in receiving, James could challenge Matt Spaeth for the backup tight end roll and certainly be a strong successor to Heath Miller.

"I think it's a great fit for me, and coming to Pittsburgh ... I couldn't be more excited to come home and get in there and go to work,'' James said. "So, I'm happy to get back home and play for my hometown team.

"(And) I couldn't be more excited to get in the tight ends room with Heath Miller and learn from him and watch him practice. He's is a guy I've watched film on through last year, and I'm just trying to learn his game and how he goes about things. So, he's going to be a great guy to learn from.''

The last South Allegheny High School player taken in the NFL Draft by the Steelers was linebacker Ron Crosby. He also played at Penn State and was drafted during the fifth round in 1977.

Here's some stats and facts regarding the Steelers fifth round pick, Penn State tight end Jesse James.

The Steelers like big, physical tight ends, and Jesse James fits that bill.

The Penn State junior, taken in the fifth round by the Steelers in the 2015 NFL Draft, resembles veteran tight ends Heath Miller and Matt Spaeth with his massive frame. The Steelers hope James can use that size to thrive on the next level, specially as a red zone target.

Here's some others facts and stats about the newest Steelers tight end:

A local guy

A native of Glassport, Pennsylvania, James went to in-state Penn State for college and will remain in the Keystone State to start his NFL career. He earned First Team-All-Century Conference honors his junior and senior seasons while playing for South Allegheny High School, catching a combined total of 71 passes for 1,030 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Career-record holder

Despite leaving early as a junior, James left Penn State as the school's career touchdown reception leader for a tight end. His three touchdowns in 2014 gave him a record 11 career touchdowns. One out of every three passes he caught went for a touchdown his freshman season, with five of his 15 catches resulting in six points.

A consistent threat

James was a consistent receiver for Penn State in 2014, catching at least three passes seven times last season that included seven catch, 60-yard effort in the Nittany Lions' 26-24 victory over Central Florida last season.

James fits the mold of Steelers tight ends

At 6'7'' and 254 pounds, James' muscular, wide build is similar to Pittsburgh's veteran tight ends Heath Miller and Matt Spaeth. Miller stands at 6'5'' and weighs in at 256 pounds, while Spaeth checks in at 6'7'' and 260 pounds. While raw, James will have a chance to learn from these two pros about how he can use his body to his advantage in both run blocking and receiving situations.

Giving back

The Director of Marketing for Uplifting Athletes at Penn States, James helped raise more than $150,000 for kidney cancer in 2013-14.

The Pittsburgh Steelers selected Jesse James in the 2015 NFL Draft. Time to grade out the selection, what grade would you give this newest member of the Steelers.

"He has the size, length, and power combination that you look for."

The following quote was given by ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay about new Steelers tight end Jesse James, who was drafted in the fifth round on Saturday.

James has physical tools you can't coach. At 6'7'' and 254 pounds, James should be a nice red zone target for quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. Sometimes lining up in the slot, James caught a tight end school record 11 touchdowns at Penn State.

James was credited in his NFL.com draft bio for being an active receiver, meaning that James will continue to maneuver to make himself open down field. He also takes advantage of his height and wide frame, often using his of his size to make plays against smaller defenders.

James did not, however, stand out in terms of run blocking, and will also need to improve on adjusting to off target throws and making "the tough catch." His draft bio also stated that James will need to improve on his "mechanical" route running and release off the ball. Like fourth round pick Doran Grant, these all seem like coachable issues that the Steelers brass can work with.

One question ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper voiced Saturday was why James decided to forgo his senior season at Penn State. According to Kiper, another year at Penn State and continuing to work on his techniques would have served him well.

Given where he was drafted and the fact that the Steelers were looking to obtain a tight end, this selection makes sense. And given that the Steelers still have Heath Miller and Matt Spaeth on the roster, James will have time to mature and work on his mechanics. James is also built like Miller and Speath, and he can learn first hand how to improve on his run blocking skills by following their leads.

The other question to be asked is what other players were available that could have helped the Steelers at this selection? One player is Ohio State defensive tackle Michael Bennett, who was still available when the Steelers drafted James.

BTSC Grade: B

The Pittsburgh Steelers continue to address team needs and wants through the 2015 NFL Draft by selecting Jesse James in the 5th round.

With two days down in the 2015 NFL Draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers have only 3 draft picks remaining after their fifth round pick was spent taking Penn State tight end Jesse James.

James is a tall target, standing at 6'7'' and weighing in at 254 pounds. In three seasons at Penn State, James caught 78 passes for 1,005 yards and 11 touchdowns. His production steadily increased each year, recording 15 catches in 2012, 25 in '13 and 38 passes caught in 2014. James tallied 396 receiving yards last season while scoring three of his tight end school-record 11 career touchdown receptions.

The Steelers still have 3 draft picks remaining: two 6th round selections and a 7th round selection. The last 6th round pick is a compensatory pick which cannot be traded away to move any specific draft position. The Steelers still have holes to fill on their roster and will look to do so throughout the rest of Day 3 of the draft, as well as by signing undrafted free agents following the draft.

For those fans wondering how important, or lack thereof, a 6th or 7th round pick can be? Current Steelers Antonio Brown and Kelvin Beachum were taken in the 6th and 7th rounds respectfully.

Stay tuned to BTSC for all your Steelers' draft analysis, coverage and in-depth looks into all of the team's newest members.
