Report: Steelers RB DeAngelo Williams injured left ankle has him 'day-to-day' after MRI

The Pittsburgh Steelers could have dodged a major bullet in regards to DeAngelo Williams' availability for the Wild Card game this Saturday against the Cincinnati Bengals.

It felt like deja vu for the Pittsburgh Steelers and their fan base. Another Week 17 game, another trip to the AFC Wild Card round on deck and another injury to the team's starting running back.

In 2014 it was Le'Veon Bell being carted off the field after hyper-extending his knee after a Reggie Nelson low hit when Bell had caught a pass over the middle of the field. In 2015, it was a Browns' defensive lineman falling on Williams' ankle as he went to the ground.

Williams did return from the locker room, presumably where X-Rays were taken, but never returned to the game. There was no official update on his status after the game by Mike Tomlin, but ESPN's Adam Schefter cited Williams having an MRI Monday which would show the severity of the ankle injury, and subsequently his availability this Saturday night for the Steelers.

Reports are now surfacing from ESPN's Britt McHenry that Williams is considered day-to-day after the MRI showed no fracture, or major structural damage to the ankle. Per the report, "A source told ESPN's Jeremy Fowler that Williams told at least one teammate after the game, before he underwent the MRI on Monday, that he thought it was foot/ankle strain, and not serious."

This would certainly be the best-case scenario not only for Williams, but for the Steelers. Williams gives the team a balance they wouldn't have if they had to rely on Fitzgerald Toussaint and Jordan Todman to carry the load in the playoffs. Just like Ben Tate, Dri Archer and Josh Harris were unable to carry the load in 2014.

Mike Tomlin will address the media Tuesday for his weekly press conference, and the coach will certainly give an update on his starting running back's injury and a potential timetable for his return.
