Spread for Steelers vs. Chiefs AFC Divisional round resembles a roller coaster

New, comments

The Pittsburgh Steelers opened as favorites, then were underdogs, and then back to favorites in some books. We go over the spread for this AFC Divisional round playoff game.

There are some who never care, or watch, the Las Vegas spread or odds for any athletic event, but I wouldn’t put myself into that category. From a young age I remember looking at my Dad’s work pool spread sheet as he looked at the numbers trying to win a few extra bucks on a weekly basis.

I learned about how home field advantage carries with it a normal 3-point spread, and how Vegas sets the line to try and move money, or picks, towards the underdog. One of the things I learned was the danger of the close spread.

That is exactly what is going on with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Divisional game this Sunday at 1 p.m. ET at Arrowhead Stadium.

To be honest, this week has seen the spread move up and down like a roller coaster. The Steelers, after beating the Miami Dolphins in the AFC Wild Card game, opened as anywhere from 1 to 2-point favorites, even on the road in the Divisional round.

Then Ben Roethlisberger was seen in his walking boot, and the spread changed.

Kansas City, not Pittsburgh, then became the 1 to 2-point favorite in the contest. As more information on Roethlisberger’s injury was released, and it became clear he will not just play, but shouldn’t be limited at all by the injury, some sports books in Vegas went back to Pittsburgh being favored again. However, the rebound spread was never more than 1-point.

These two teams are evenly matched, and the spread certainly echoes that sentiment. If you follow the spread, like I do, you have had a number of chances to get to the window. Most books have the Steelers getting points at this stage in the process, and if you are like me, you want to get to the window to take the black and gold to win, and getting bonus points.
